Sella & Mosca winery
650 hectares of vineyards, the historic winery founded in 1899
✽ 8 km — 15 min by car

Sella & Mosca is the largest wine producer in northern Sardinia and one of Italy's most historic. Founded in 1899 by the Piedmontese lawyer Edgardo Sella and the Genoese engineer Erminio Mosca, it now owns 650 hectares of continuous vineyards — one of the largest single-estate wine properties in Europe. Its rows yield wines that have shaped Sardinian oenology: Torbato, Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, Cannonau di Sardegna, and the celebrated Marchese di Villamarina, one of the island's most awarded reds. Eight kilometres from Alghero, a visit is almost compulsory for wine lovers.
History and wines
Sella and Mosca arrived in Alghero in 1899 in search of lands suited to quality wine-growing, after phylloxera had devastated European vineyards. The I Piani area in Alghero's territory offered calcareous-clay soils, ventilated climate and an ideal microclimate. Through the 20th century, the estate introduced Torbato from Spain — a grape variety now grown almost exclusively here in Italy — and refined production of Vermentino, Cannonau and Cabernet Sauvignon, with results that today place it among Italy's finest. Flagship wines: Marchese di Villamarina (100% Cabernet), Terre Rare (Carignano del Sulcis), and Tanca Farrà (Cannonau and Cabernet).
The visit and tasting
The guided tour covers all the production stages: it starts in the estate museum, which tells Sella & Mosca's history with archive documents and original objects; it continues in the barrel room, where over two thousand French-oak barriques age the most important reds; it ends with a tasting of five or seven wines (depending on the package chosen), paired with carasau bread, olives, Sardinian cheeses and honey. The tour lasts about an hour and a half. Optional: vineyard tour aboard a small tourist train. The estate also has a wine shop where you can buy the entire production at cellar prices.
